What to Read When Everything Feels Like Too Much
Share
At Book Quote Therapy, I write literary prescriptions: the books, poems and quotes I'd reach for when a particular feeling turns up. You'll find the full one for overwhelm here. I share some of them on this blog too, because this shop started in the same place. Most of the prints here began as a line that got someone through a hard day, and I've always believed the words that help us shouldn't stay hidden in books. So each prescription here ends with a few prints for that feeling, in case one of them belongs on your wall.
For: when everything feels like too much at once
The Quote
'You have power over your mind - not outside events. Realise this, and you will find strength.'
Marcus Aurelius, Meditations
The Poem
The Peace of Wild Things by Wendell Berry.
When the anxiety arrives, often at night, often without warning, Berry does something quietly radical: he doesn't try to fight it or reason it away. He simply goes outside. He lies down where the wood drake rests in his beauty on the water. He rests in the grace of the world, and is free.
Three minutes to read. Go and find it today, it's waiting for you at On Being, where you can also hear Berry read it himself.

The Book
Notes on a Nervous Planet by Matt Haig
Written in short, digestible chapters, because Haig understands that an anxious mind struggles with long, dense passages, this is one of the most honest and humane books written about living with too much noise, too much information, and too much to carry.
He doesn't offer a cure. He offers company.
And sometimes that is exactly what's needed.
The Reflection
When everything feels like too much at once, the instinct is usually to do more, to manage it, solve it, push through it. But overwhelm isn't a problem to be solved. It's a signal. A quiet message from somewhere inside that something needs to slow down, not speed up.
The right words help here not because they fix anything, but because they remind you that this feeling has a name, a shape, and an end. That other people, writers, poets, philosophers, have sat inside this exact feeling and found their way through it, and thought it worth writing down.
You're not too much.
You're just carrying more than you need to right now.
The Question to Sit With
What is one thing I could put down, just for today?
A Gentle Pause
I recorded this meditation for exactly this feeling. Eight minutes. No effort required, just somewhere quiet to sit and let everything settle.

Words for the Wall
If you'd like words on the wall for days like this, have a look at the Calm & Stillness prints, or Max Ehrmann's Desiderata, which begins with going placidly amid the noise and haste. And if you're looking for a book or poem for a different feeling, the Literary Compass will point you somewhere good.
