A death's-head hawkmoth, Acherontia atropos, pinned in an old gilt specimen case with handwritten labels and a drawing of the skull marking on its back.
The collector's card says it was taken near Palermo, Sicily in October 1874, which is when these moths fly there. The skull pattern on the thorax gave the moth its name and a long reputation as a bad omen, from Victorian folklore to The Silence of the Lambs. It's a striking piece for a study, or for anyone who loves natural history and a touch of the macabre.
Printed on premium lustre paper with a professional finish, and carefully packaged to arrive in perfect condition.
Choose from five sizes, unframed or in a sleek black frame.
Perfect for:
- Dark academia studies
- Natural history and insect lovers
- Cabinets of curiosities
- Gothic and Halloween decor
